O/G Company in the West Houston area is searching for a .Net & Ruby on Rails Software Engineer to help them create, enhance and maintain, custom and off the shelf applications build on .Net and Ruby-on-Rails technologies. This position will handle day-to-day coordination of organizational support vendors, and will act as liaison, advocate and technical translator to the business.  This position will act with the authority to resolve technical issues and will proactively recommend methods of improvement for the company’s use of technology.

The incumbent will provide technical solutions by conducting or participating in technical research and collaboration with internal customers, developers and/or vendors in the design, development and utilization of custom applications. Collaborate with business areas and other Applications Team members and/or vendors both on and off-shore in the design, development and utilization of custom applications.  The individual filling this role will be a team player and collaborator and will be adept at both direct and indirect communication methods which will include being well spoken, informed, thoughtful, and thorough.  Additionally, this individual will be known for technical skill and ability to offer solutions for improvement to business flow, reduction in cost, and improved service to the business. Individual will thrive in a fast-paced environment and will be able to recommend technology advancements that are achievable with the pace and within budget constraints.

Reports to:           Senior Manager, IT Applications.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related discipline
  • Master’s Degree in an IT related field preferred

Technical Skills:

  • 7+ years of experience with progressive responsibility in applications analysis, design, development and support, and application analysis & design
  • Experience with providing production/operational support to web and desktop applications
  • Knowledge of software development life-cycle methodologies (e.g. Waterfall, Iterative, Agile)
  • Experience with translating business requirements into system functional and non-functional requirements
  • Ability to quickly learn new technologies
  • Excellent systems integration knowledge between supported applications and varied targets
  • Strong and methodical trouble-shooting skills
  • Strong analytical, problem solving, organizational, and planning skills
  • Proven track record as a team player, quick learner and a self-learner
  • Flexibility to quickly adapt to change
  • Ability to function effectively in a fast paced, team-oriented work environment

Required Technical and Systems Experience:

  • Experience with technologies like .Net, Ruby on Rails, and Java
  • Experience with database technologies like Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle DB
  • Proficient in Linux and Windows OS

Preferred Education, Experience, Certifications and Skills:

  • Experience working with offshore development teams preferred
  • Experience with Internet of Things technologies and mobile platforms preferred
  • Experience with hosting and supporting applications in the cloud, Microsoft Azure experience preferred

Responsibilities:

  • Assists the Director in the management and direction setting of a portfolio of applications with varied technologies such as .Net, Ruby on Rails, 3rd party software, Java, etc., including technical support, user support and vendor support
  • Responsible for the management of day–to-day operational support activities for non-ERP related applications in the portfolio
  • Leads the development and deployment of changes to supported applications including gathering requirements, completing design, possibly working with vendors and minor project management activities
  • Interfaces with the end users and the technical development support teams to ensure effective support and enhancements of the applications supported
  • Works closely with business managers and users to understand their processes and procedures and makes recommendations to evolve the application portfolio to improve such processes; Participates in the development and implementation of processes that improve efficiency and enhance productivity
  • Manages vendor relationships that are required to provide operational support
  • Provides hands-on application and data management support, training, and problem solving for the applications supported
  • Coordinates preventative maintenance activities between vendors, IT and the business, including the installation of service packs, patches, and hot fixes
  • Keeps abreast of new technical standards and practices and cloud functionality
  • Collaborates with enterprise architect and infrastructure to integrate applications and hardware
  • Ensures that the design and application implementation meeting security and QA standards
  • Analyzes/monitors applications to ensure that the functionality and performance meets all product and service level requirements
  • Supports Sarbanes Oxley (SOX) processes and procedures
